Locally: Culture Animation / Community Arts (PL)

2008

The most important inspiration for educational and practical activities in the area of culture animation in the recent years has been – owing to the opportunities for international cooperation offered as part of the Leonardo da Vinci programme – the community arts practice and idea that we have become familiar with via British practitioners of this art form associated in the Laundry Association. As regards the anthropological reflection practice at the Institute of Polish Culture, a clear move has been observed towards research, ethnographic workshops as a method of studying the Other, but also towards meetings with the Other, identifying their his or her needs, which is a necessary element before any shared activity is undertaken.

As such, Locally serves as a bridge of sorts between our earlier experience and new ideas, bridging academic thought, artistic practice and activity within the culture realm. It presents the idea of active culture – a few decades after the notion was coined (essay by Małgorzata Litwinowicz), the community arts idea (Anna Ptak) and the objectives and effects of the ethnographic workshop as an introduction to animation practice (Tomasz Rakowski). The preface to the book was written by Grzegorz Godlewski.
