Culture/Democracy

A series of lectures and workshops aimed at initiating a critical debate on participation in culture via meetings with experienced practitioners from abroad. It was an opportunity to reflect on the ways of practising democracy in culture on the example of community arts, public art, multi-generational projects, research in action and engaged city studies. Each two-day session consisted of an open lecture and workshop.

Residency

The core objective of the “Residency. Developing a model of arts residency applied to civic engagement” project was developing a model of an art residency, grounded in a local community, that via the engagement of the community in activities addressing issues relevant to the local community would increase civic involvement and a sense of having an impact. The project consisted in holding three art residencies in three different countries thus enabling collaboration of artists, culture animators, local activists, local communities and institutions.

Localise

“LOCALISE. Study tour as a model for research, education and practice in vocational training in culture animation and working with local communities” was a two-year-long programme realised with foreign partners from Lithuania and Great Britain. The objective of the project was to develop a module of training based on the idea of a study tour as a means of learning about the operation of diverse national, cultural and institutional contexts.

Study Trips

The Culture Animation specialisation has been organising study trips for many years and these have ever since the beginning been a crucial element in the training of future culture animators, as well as a means of establishing a network of contacts and a knowledge base about local communities.

Powiśle Project

In the academic year 2017/2018, the Culture Animation specialisation was executing a novel training programme focused on the Powiśle district – the venue of ongoing and future activities carried out under the Multi-year Programme for the Development of the University of Warsaw, and, at the same time, one of the most dynamically changing districts in Warsaw.

Our Universities

“Our universities” is an art and research project conducted as part of the multi-year programme “University of Warsaw 2016-2025” in the University of Warsaw Ochota Campus from January to June 2017. The main theme of the activities was a reflection on the university as a whole, both imagined and existing, namely the Ochota Campus.

UW/Introspections

The project was organised in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the University of Warsaw and the 40th anniversary of the Institute of Polish Culture of the University of Warsaw. Local Labs

Local Lab is a new workshop format introduced into the Culture Animation specialisation syllabus in 2015. The workshops are held beyond the University walls, in one of Warsaw districts and envisage the cooperation of students with residents and representatives of local social and culture institutions.

“1 on 1” with Culture Animator

“1 on 1” is an original format developed by the Chair of Culture Association and the Culture Animation specialisation aimed at creating a situation of support and inspiration for debuting culture animators.

UW/Transgressions

UW/ Transgressions are a series of urban interventions conducted by the students of the Culture Animation specialisation under the supervision of performance and visual artists. Transgressing the walls of the university, the project was a reference to the idea of opening the academic world onto the social context, and the University of Warsaw onto the city of Warsaw.

The “Creative Communities” Seminar

An international seminar entitled “Creative Communities. From the experience of culture animation and community arts” was the final event of the two-year project carried out in collaboration with the Arts Institute (Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas) and the Creative Communities Unit (Staffordshire University) entitled “Localise. Study tour as a model for research, education and practice in vocational training in culture animation and working with local communities”.

Social Museum in Wola

Students of the Culture Animation specialisation took part in a community and art project by Krzysztof Żwirblis – the Social Museum the aim of which was the integration of residents of the block between the Wolska, Skierniewicka and Płocka streets in Warsaw.  (more…)

 

Listening to Gozdowo

Activities in Gozdowo were carried out by animators and artists from the Institute of Polish Culture, the Chair of Culture Association and the Laundry association with the participation of the Association of Creative Initiatives ę in June and July 2007.

Animator

The “Education and Re-Education through Practice in the field of culture animation – ANIMATOR” was aimed at facilitating the exchange of skills, experiences and knowledge between culture animation students, graduates and practitioners. Its objective was bridging university education with independent work and theory and practice.
